Blog, blog, blog........

Welcome, children, to our blog, a little space on which you may leave your personal imprint (as it pertains to literature and my class, at least). If you have not blogged yet, then it will be an experiment for both of us; I have not had a class blog - ever! It should be more fun for you to do this than regular responses, such as a journal, because we can bring other outlets to the blog that can add to the discussion.

If you look at the sidebar, I will continuously post links throughout the year - some to help your writing, some that are relevant to all aspects of our class and some that may just interest you. Still working on that, so bear with me!

I'm really excited to hear (read) what you have to say, but please keep it appropriate or I'll have to end up censoring you, and no one wants that to happen. I know I'll find wisdom in your words, and I'll provide you with as much direction as I can.

So here goes nothing. ;-)

Dream of Californication

We just analyzed the lyrics to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Californication", a song about media overexposure in our society and the false portrayal of life created by it. This is a song rich in symbolism and imagery, which, in turn, helps to communicate it's message.

The visuals in the video take it another step further. The director's perspective is a creative and relevant portrayal of the theme, and I think you'll really enjoy it. Remember that this video was made in 1999, and so the likes of it were rather new.

Now I want you to view the video and listen to the song.

"Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, courtesy of MTV

After you view it, I want you to respond to the theme of the song and the concept of the video in the following ways:

1. What about the overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics?

2. Name 3 (total) ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics.

3. In relation to the song's theme, why is it ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers and that you have just watched a video for it?

Please answer in complete sentences and as thoroughly as possible. Email me on StudyWiz with any questions.

  2. The whole music video is like a video game- this is referring to the very first line in the song Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind’s elation. Meaning technology is deteriorating your imagination. The video also represented the concept that “Californication” is unrealistic and fake.

Three ways that the video showed a visual interpretation of the lyrics is:
    1. they showed a pregnant teenager in the video when the lyrics said Teenage bride with a baby inside 2.they showed space in a Hollywood Studio (basement)
3.they also showed soft porn being filmed in the studio as well

It is ironic that this song is performed by the Chile Peppers because they are rock stars and you would imagine them as having this kind of “Californication” life. But yet, they are saying it is not real. It is just as ironic that we, as teenagers, are watching this video because it is really our generation that has and uses all of this new technology or media such as video games and cell phones. They are saying that through all of this technology we are living unrealistic lives.

  3. 1. The overall concept of the music video is a video game. Video games are never real, and it relates to California and Hollywood, because it goes to show that California isn’t all what it’s cut out to be, just like video games.

    2. One-way is that it says “made in a Hollywood basement”, and it shows a basement-like setting and a movie is being made. It shows in the very beginning the guy trying to be robbed by a gang, which represents “Try to steal your mind’s elation”. The third is “Little girls from Sweden Dream of Silver Screen quotations” and you see what appears to be a Swedish woman in the back round.

    3. It’s ironic that I just watched the video, because they say its all fake, and they accuse Hollywood, but yet they probably used Hollywood producers and such to make the video itself.

  4. 1. When I watched the video it reminded me a lot of the song. It seemed to me like the guy was running through scenes in the video that the group was singing about. It showed that, when taken over by "Californication", you go through many obstacles to make yourself more accustomed to the "famous" Californian life. An ex. of this was when the guy was running through the streets dodging falling buildings.

    2. First, the guy is shown dodging "asian spies" while running across the Hollywood walk of fame. Second, in the scenew where the guy is falling through the sky, there's a flying unicorn which represents the fake anf "non-real" way people show themselves to the world in the Californication life. Finally, when it says "or is this war your waging", the guy is in the water "fighting" with a shark.

    3. It is ironc that it is performed by the Chili Peppers because they are part of Hollywood, and it is ironic that we are watching a video that describes "Californication" when most normal everyday people like us dream of living the famous life.

    1) The theme of the lyrics is that life in California represents a fantasy filled with pleasures. The overall concept of the video is the bandmembers in a race in various California settings in the form of a video game. The video game demonstrate the fantasy of life in California such as becoming a movie star and always stay looking young through plastic surgery.

    2) a. The lyrics include a description of earthquakes in the seventh verse of the song, “And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar, they’re just another good vibration,” and the video shows a Richter scale and scenes of falling buildings and debris.
    b. The lyrics include a reference to beautiful, young women coming to California with dreams of becoming movie stars, “Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations,” and the video showed a pretty, blond girl getting off a bus and going into a casting agency.
    c. In the fourth verse, there is a description of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, “And buy me a star on the boulevard, it’s Californication,” and in the video, there is a line of stars on the ground outside the casting agency that the pretty blond girl is going to.

    3) The song is about how California represents a fantasy and not being real. But the Red Hot Chili Peppers originated in California and turned the fantasy into a reality. They became a famous, Gramy award winning band.

  6. 1. The theme of the song was definitely portrayed through the lyrics of the song. The lyrics talked about plastic surgery and how you can look like a celebrity by getting plastic surgery. This was portrayed in the video because the actors never changed at all throughout the video. They always looked perfect. In the song it also said that you should “Dream of Californication” because that’s the way the celebrity’s and all of the famous people live. Everyone wants to be, live, and look like the celebrity’s and that all your dreams will come true in California.
    2. “It’s the edge of the world and all of Western Civilization” is a lyric from the song that is portrayed in the music video by a snowboarder jumping off of cliffs. “A teenage bride with a baby inside” is another lyric from Californication and it is portrayed in the video by one of the characters walking up to a bride who was pregnant. Another lyric would be “Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations”. This is portrayed in the video by a Sweden girl getting off of a bus and going onto a place where she can try out for parts in movies.
    3. This is ironic because we, as teenagers, dream of the lives of famous people and dream we live in Hollywood, and also wish we have a lot of money like the celebrities do. The chili peppers are singing this song but yet they are famous people. They are telling us the lives we dream of living, their lives, is not true at all. It just seems like they are living the “dream” because of the way all of the reporters who write for magazines put it. It’s ironic we just watched a video for it because we are the ones that are using all of the technology that is made. By using all of this technology, they say we are living fake lives and not real ones.

  7. The theme of the video is a video game which represents how the world is fake because video games are not always based on real life events. The characters in the video game are based on the band members of Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Some themes from the video that I noticed are:

    1. When one of the characters was walking on the street, a pregnant teenager walks past him.

    2. They also show how the buildings are collapsing which could stand for an earthquake which is a vibration.

    3. They also state that it was made in a Hollywood basement and the background seems to resemble a dark and saddened theme.

It is ironic that the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrote this son because they are rock stars and everything seems unreal to them because they can pretty much get away with everything.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1.) The lyrics suggest the way of life in Hollywood. The video game aspect shows a visual interpretation of the song. The player in the game shows himself going through different scenes like most people in Hollywood do.

2.) One way the video shows an interpretation of the lyrics is the girls from Sweden wanting to make it on the silver screen, so the video shows girls dressed up going into a casting agency. A second way is the teenage bride with a baby inside, which a teenage girl, that is pregnant, is shown in the video. A third way is the space movies being made in a Hollywood basement, and it is shown in the video.

3.) The irony is that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are singing a song about fornication and they are exposed to it because they are rock singers and spend lots of time in Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1) The lyrics and the music video go together perfect. It is all just a fantasy that California is so great and glamorous. The video games are the same way they are not real, and most of the time they are in a "fantasy land".

    2) The three ways the music video offers a visual interpretation is when there is an earthquake at the end and he is standing on the edge of the world, they show the pregnant teenage bride, and when he is talking about dreams he is in the clouds were u picture dreams are made.

    3) It is ironic that the Red Hot Chili Peppers preform this because they are "Hollywood". They live the lifestyle of the rich and glamorous. It is just shocking a mainstream band like this would preform this song.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1) The theme of the lyrics is life in California is a utopia. The overall concept of the video is to show you that hollywood isnt all real. They make everything seem two times better than it actualy is. The video is also made as a video game because they are also fake.

    2) 3 total ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics are first...when he runs through the basement which is where they are making porn, second...the little girls from Sweden are getting of the bus to make there dreams come true, third...he has to run away from the asian spies.

3)It's ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers because they came from California and made it big time. They dont seem to fit with the song becuase they aren't complaning about the fame. But i think they are just making a point to future stars.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. The overall concept of the music video was demonstrated by the singers playing in a videogame of life in California. Video games aren’t real and this song explains that all the different levels in the game were just obstacles (levels) in the game. It was basically the game of unreal life.

    2. (1)“A teenage bride with a baby inside Getting High on information” This was shown in the video by a pregnant girl.
    (2) “Space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood basement” This was shown by the space film set in the video.
    (3) “And tidal waves couldn’t save the world From Californication” This was shown by the California streets being destroyed and the buildings all falling down.

    3. It is very ironic that the Chili Peppers are singing about Fornication and how life in California is unrealistic and a giant fantasy. They probably all experienced this lifestyle and then looked back at the life they were living and knew that it was a giant fake.

1.The overall concept of the music video was that they were in a video game, but they were still themselves. In the video game they had a false sense of reality and could get out of any bad situation and overcome it. This ties in with the theme of Californication because the theme shows false perceptions of the world and what America is really about, and how the rest of the world sees us.

2.In the beginning of the video a unicorn flies out. This symbol of a unicorn is used because a unicorn is a fictional animal and represents the fake qualities of Hollywood.

When the line of “little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations” is sung, there is a girl walking out of a bus to a building that says casting agency looking for hot talent. This is a symbol of how young girls look at being famous. They would exploit themselves because they feel that’s how you get famous and Hollywood is mostly to blame.

During the line “space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood basement” the character in the video game runs through a movie set of space. This shows that the movies and all the portrayals of the world can be made up for the sake of movies and money.

3.The irony of this is that the song is about media overexposure and yet it was a song that was played on the radio and TV that we got this message. The fact is that without media we as a society wouldn’t be able to hear or see other people’s opinions in this case.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1)The overall concept of the music video is a video game. Video games are unrealistic and this music video is connected with California because when people go to California or Hollywood to pursue their dreams it doesnt always work out how they want it to.
2)Three ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of symbols or images in the lyrics are:1)When they show a pergnant teenager and the lyrics say a teenage bride with a baby inside.2)The lyrics say little girls from sweden dream of silver screen quotations and in the video it shows sweden girls and a big screen that has castings.3)In the beginning of the video one of the guys is running through asian spies.
3)It is ironic that the Chili Peppers performed this song because the lyrics are like a fantasy and a video is like a fantasy beacus its not real.

  14. 1. The overall concept of the song is that the media shows only how great California (Hollywood) is. It’s so great that people from other countries want to move to America to live the glittery life. However, it’s unrealistic because the media only shows the glamorous side of California. Hollywood is selling a bag of goods, its all brainwashing.

    2. Examples of symbolism are: (a) “It’s the edge of the world; and all of western civilization.” The video shows California as an island with nothing around it. (b) “A teenage bride with a baby inside getting high on information.” The video shows a pregnant teenager who’s mesmerized by the Hollywood hype. (c) “Little girls from Sweden; dream of silver screen quotations.” The video shows a girl getting off a bus heading straight to a casting agency.

    3. It’s ironic because the band members grew up in Los Angelus. They lived the California life. When they achieved their goals (became famous), they sold songs about the corrupt lifestyle (to make money). They used Hollywood’s tools to achieve their success.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1.) The overall concept that helps demonstrate the theme of the video is that mostly everything in the video is a cartoon. This also shows how a lot of things in Hollywood have become fake because of the media exposure.
2.) Three total ways the video gives a visual interpretation would be when one of the band member runs through the warehouse wear they are filming a fake space video. It also shows the pregnant teenager getting “high” off of information. Another symbol shown is all the Swedish girls waiting to try out for a play.
3.) The ironic thing is that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are very well known and they get a lot of publicity. Also that they are making a video to promote their video to get people to see it on television or computers.

    1. The music video is like one of the sim games. Where they make their own person, give them as much money as they need and do all the crazy stuff that a person doesn't usually do. It is an unrealistic world, and that is what this song is talking about. How people think they have to live in this make believe world to seem like these celebrities.

    2. First it says, "A teenage bride with a baby inside" and it shows a pregnant teenager in a trailer park. Second it states, "Little girls from Sweden, Dream of silver screen quotations", than it shows a movie theatre and ads for agencies. A last example of a visual interpretation is when it says, "But its made in a Hollywood Basement" and it has a scene where he is jumping over the actors in bed.

3.It is ironic that Chili Peppers are singing this song because we would just imagine them living that kind of life because they are rock-stars and have that reputation. It is also ironic because that's what our generation believes is the way we should all live. That is all we know and hear about it because of the type of technology we have today.

  18. 1.The overall concept of the video is that Hollywood is fake it is like a game and neither of them are real and to believe it is californication .

    2. One way the video offers a visual interpretation of the lyrics is when it talks about”it's the edge of the world and all Western civilization”. They have a character skiing and is very popular for movie stars to go skiing. California has famous ski slopes another way they offer visual interpretations is when they sing” a teenage bride with the baby inside getting high off information” they have the dad of the girl in the back of the picture as to say he is forcing the character into a shotgun wedding. When they sing” space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement” they show movies being made about space and other genres of movies being made.

    3. It is ironic that the chili peppers sing this song because California has a huge music industry and the singing songs that are demeaning there own lifestyle

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. The whole video was like a video game. The last line of verse one was, “It’s Californication.” That line represents a lifestyle that is fake and unreal.

    2. They show a pregnant teen, space in a studio as the final frontier, and hardcore soft porn.

    3. This is ironic because the Red Hot Chili Peppers are part of Hollywood and they are telling the listeners of the video that it is all fake.

  20. 1) The concept of the video was a video game. Video games show things that arent real just like california. They show people the perfect life when only a select few have a life like people dream of.

    2) Three ways the video shows an interpretation of symbols is... They show space being filmed in a hollywood studio. Also they show a girl getting off a bus going into a casting studio which relates to the little girls from sweden. They show a guy getting robbed which relates to stealing your minds elation.

This is ironic that the Red Hot Chili Peppers sang this song because they have the life that people dream of. They have the fantasy life, also they are from California so they are singing about how they live. The video shows how they live, they live the fantasy life an sing about it.

  21. 1) The video is a video game. I think it resembles the fact that californication is fake and unrealistic just like video games. Also the video shows how hollwood is different from how the media portrays it to be. And think that is shown in the video when the man is running through the falling buildings and stuff.

    2) In one part you saw the blonde girl get off the bus and walk into a line of Swedish girls waiting for casting calls. Also it shows a pregnant teenager. Lastly they showed space in a Hollywood basement.

    3) It is ironic that they are singing it because they are famous and part of this glamorous life. Yet they singing about how its unrealistic and fake when they are living this unrealistic life.

  22. 1.The concept of this video is a video game. It is a fantasy just like most people's dream to be famous and how California isn't everything that it seems to be.
2.There is the lyric "Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement" and in the video they show a movie set doing a space movie. Another is "A teenage bride with a baby inside…" and in the video they show a girl pregnant. One more is they showed hardcore soft porn being filmed.
3.It is ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers because they are part of California and Hollywood. It is ironic that were watching it because they said it was all fake.

  23. 1)The overall concept of this music video is a video game. The band is trying to portray that video games are not real and neither is California with all the fantasy and video games are not reality. People have gotten used to the fantasy life in California.

    2)Three ways they showed visual interpretations with the lyrics;
When the soft porn way being showed
When they showed a pregnant women
Lastly when the man was falling through the sky

    3) It is ironic to watch the Chili Peppers perform this because they are probably living the life style of “Californication.” They keep saying its all fake, but they are probably the fake ones.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. The overall concept is a video game. Video games are usually fantasy and portray life in a totally different way than how it is lived. Just like “Californication” depicts the Hollywood lifestyle in an unrealistic way.

    2. Three ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of symbols and images is”Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations”. It appears that many Swedish women are standing outside of a theatre. Another is “a teenage bride with a baby inside” a pregnant teenage girl is shown standing outside a house. “Space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood Basement “a space film is shown being made in a basement setting.

    3. It is ironic that the Red Hot Chile Peppers perform this song because they are famous rock stars and people that you would think represent the idea of “Californication” and the glamorous lifestyle that goes along with it. It is also ironic that we, as teenagers, just viewed the video because it is easy for us to get wrapped up in this fantasy way of life with today’s technology and media.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. The overall concept that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are conveying to me is that it is filmed like a video game. When they put it in a video game made me think that it’s all fake and that is what they are trying to show. They are trying to show the world that Hollywood and fame is all fake and is not cracked up to be what it is. Video games are fake and they are saying their world is fake.

    2. One of the first visual interpretations I saw was when they one character in the game was running through the woods and there was a girl and she had a baby bump. This refers to the part of the song that says, “ A teenage bride with a baby inside”. The second is “But it’s made in Hollywood’s basement”. This line goes with the character running through Hollywood studios filming. Lastly at the end of the video all four characters are running through the town and all the buildings are falling and people are scurrying everywhere, this refers to “Destruction leads to a very rough road”.

    3. It is ironic because they are famous and they are writing and singing about how they do not like this life and how it’s annoying it is to them, but they live it. They are saying that this life is unrealistic but it is completely real to them because that is their everyday lives.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. The lyrics suggested the theme for "Californication" should be unrealistic so to represent that, the video was similar to a video game. In video games everything is fake and that is how the title "Californication" is a fantasy and people can only dream to live that type of life.

    2. Three ways the video showed a visual interpretation of the lyrics are:

    1. In the video they showed girls dressed in tasteless outfits in line to auditon for a casting agency whichs represents people from around the world wanting to be famous for the wrong reason. 2. Many teenagers are influenced in the wrong way and to do inappropriate things that they believe are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and in the video they show a girl who has to get married because she got pregnant. 3. In the lyrics, "And earthquakes are to a girl's guitar, they're just another good vibration" it means that people are never taken serioulsy and always treated like dirt.

    3. It's ironic that the song was performed by the Chili Peppers because you would think they have a life known as "Californication" but are saying in their song that it is all a fantasy. It's ironic for me because I watch and play video games and use technology which the song is saying is unreal. We live our lives with so much technology that we spend most of our time by ourselves but still talk to people through the texting and Facebook.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. The video helps demonstrate the theme of the song because video games are very popular in our society. Video games don’t always portray true things such as killing etc. So to me the analogy is that video games are portraying the badness, to people, Just as the People are portraying badness to other people in the world.
    2. Some way the video interprets the song lyrics are:
1: Snowboarding and jumping over a cliff.
2: Running down the Hollywood strip, shirtless and jumping over people.
3: Swimming through the ocean with no air supply.
    3. It is ironic that the song is performed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers because they were known as a non-mainstream band singing about the mainstream events happening and trash-talking it, but the song became a mainstream hit, completely defeating the purpose of writing the song.

    1. Today’s overall concept of Hollywood is where many people go to try and achieve their dreams. People picture Hollywood as having many rich and famous people who live there. It is a glamorous place, but many things and people there are fake. The song “Cailiformication” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers is a very accurate depiction of what Hollywood actually is. The main idea in the song is that Hollywood is a place that people travel to reach their dreams. But you feel the need to change many aspects of yourself both on the outside and inside. It is a song that describes the deterioration of our society by describing Hollywood. It is describing how our modern society is becoming very fake and plastic.
    2. In the very beginning of the video, it shows California out in the ocean by itself. This represents how California is very different from the other states in America. It represents the different kind of society that California is and how it is separated from the rest of the country. Another way the video offers an interpretation is by making the characters in a video game. This represents how many video games and movies are made in Hollywood. Another example of this visual interpretation is when the video shows sets of Hollywood movies. This represents how all Hollywood movies are made on a fake set, yet we think that it is real.
    3. It is ironic because the Red Hot Chili Peppers made this song and video in California. We watched it and learned of all that is wrong in Hollywood, but however this was made on one of the fake sets in California.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. The music video setting is based in a video game. This is referring to the media that teenagers usually listen to or play that is more of a fake life. At the end of the video it shows the Red Hot Chili Peppers not in three dimensional form as the rest of the setting is, it shows them as real people. This concept is referring to the “Californication” life isn’t real, otherwise it is not realistic.

    2. Three ways the video offers a visual interpretation is..

    1. Showed a pregnant teenager standing outside.
    2. Showed a picture of the Holly Wood walk of fame
    3. Showed a unicorn flying through the sky in the beginning of the video.

    3. What is ironic to this video is the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a band and more of the rock star type. You would think that they would live a life of “Californication”. Another thing that is ironic is that I saw this video on the computer when in the song they say “psychic spies try to steal your hearts elation”. Meaning China gives us most of our technology, which is easier to view the media for teens. The media is known to corrupt our mind and to fake what life is really about, or Californication.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. The over all concept of the music video is that everything you see about California and Hollywood is not real. They make the music video as a video game that you would play. This is demonstrating that video games are never real just like Hollywood is not all what it seems.

    2. The video offers a visual interpretation of the lyrics by singing “Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations” then in the video they show a girl getting off a bus and walking into a casting agency. The second way is when they sing “or is that war your waging” then in the video they show the guy punching a shark. The third way is when they sing “a teenage bride with a baby inside” the video shows a girl who is pregnant.

    3. It is ironic that “Californication” is performed by the Chili Peppers because they are rock stars and everyone would believe that they live the “Californication” life. It is just ironic that we as teenagers are watching this because we all want to live the famous life.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1.What about the overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics?

The concept of the video is that it is a video game like someone is ruling and taking over every move that the people make representing the fact that in California or Hollywood it is like the paparazzi and the media taking control what everyone thinks and does. The theme and the concept of the video are basically telling us that not everything you see and hear in Hollywood or the media is true.

    2. Name 3 (total) ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics.

The first is he pregnant teenager like the lyrics say and the second is the soft porn that was being taped while they were singing and then the third is there was a unicorn representing the fantasy that some of the lyrics portray

    3. In relation to the song's theme, why is it ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers and that you have just watched a video for it?

Its ironic that I just watched this video and that it was preformed by the Chili Peppers because they are from Hollywood and they are making fun of everything in it in the song and yet they are in Hollywood and the video was made there.

    1. There saying that having fun in California is like having fun playing a video game.
    2. I think that the lyrics and the video don’t match at all.

  33. 1. The concept is that California is glamorous and people want to go there to be movie stars on the big screen and live in a perfect world. However, in reality it's not what everyone dreams of, they fall into a plastic, depressing, and difficult life.

    2. (1) A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information - young girls go to Hollywood to purssue their dream to be famous and unfortunately find that their pregnant instead of being movie stars becuase they get caught up in all the hype.

(2)Space may be the final frontier But it's made in a Hollywood basement.- media is making life in Hollywood sound so great and the way to live but it is actually creating a facade.

    (3)Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging.- they are saying that people who age are not marketable and they want you to look young. old does not sell.

    3. It is ironic becasue the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are famous in Hollywood. And saying that some people do get caught up in the hype of Hollywood and can't handle it(Cobain) and how being in Hollywood isn't as great as it appears.

  34. 1.The overall concept helps demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics by taking place in California. Each member of Red Hot Chili Peppers are characters in a video game. That represents how someone is controlling their life. In the song it talks about how in California, people like celebrities have other people who control their life such as paparazzi.

2.Well the first thing that symbolizes the song is the overall theme of the video which is a video game that somebody is playing. That represents how other people control lives of others. In the game on the left side it shows whenever something extreme happens, the character seems to be getting richer. I think this represents the ignorance of celebrities who feel like in order to get richer or get more of an audience they have to make extreme gestures, therefore they end up deeper in the ground then they thought they be. Lastly all throughout the video clips of the Hollywood sign were shown to represent their talking about California.

3.Its ironic because the Red Hot Chili Peppers are celebrities therefore they are talking about the people who their surrounded by everyday.

  35. 1)The overall concept of the music video is a video game. the video is connected with California and Hollywood because people go there to pursue their dreams and sometimes it doesn't work out such like a video game.

2)Three ways in which the video showed a visual interpretation of the lyrics are:1)The pregnant teenager and the lyrics say a teenage bride with a baby inside.2)Little girls from sweden dream of silver screen quotations and in the video there are sweden girls and a sign that has castings.3)In the opening of the video ont of the singers in running through "asian spies."

3)It is ironic that the song is performed by the Chili Peppers beacuse they are portraying California as a fantasy and a video is much like a fantasy it is unrealistic.

    1) A video game is the major theme in the music video because some videos are unrealistic and some are violent. This leads kids to believe that violent is what happens in life and what they should turn out to be when they grow up. The unreal part of it is that how they believe in sex before marriage, as in what God says is wrong. This shows that reality can sometimes lead to bad things in life.
2)“Pay your surgeon very well, To break the spell of aging” - this is telling people that you should look perfect in every way, which is not true because everyone looks different in their own unique way.
“A teenage bride with a baby inside” - this is showing kids that its okay to be pregnant when your young, but it really isn’t because kids that young aren’t ready for that responsibility. This song is showing the opposite of what should be really happening in reality.
I think the "first born unicorn" "hardcore soft porn" line means that there is a thin line between reality (porn) and fantasy (unicorn) and that sometimes people do not see the difference and expect California to be some magical place, but its not all fantasy its just another place in the world and not everyone has a stars life that is perfect.
    3) this video is ironic because its showing things that are bad and how they can just run away from it but really it will be there for the rest of you life. Like getting robbed you cant just run away from that, and being pregnant you cant just forget about it you have to take care of it and deal with your mistakes

  37. 1. The music video is basically just a video game. Most video games are not real and made up and you can do a lot that you can’t do in real life. The song relates to Hollywood and how it isn’t all what we think it is and how it’s not the perfect life.

    2. Three ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and images in the lyrics are:
    1. It shows in the beginning a guy about to be robbed by Asian spies, when the lyrics said, “Psychic spies from China try to steal your minds elation.”
    2. It shows a basement setting, which a movie is being made, when the lyrics said, “But it’s made in a Hollywood basement.”
    3. It shows a pregnant teenager in the video when the lyrics said, “A Teenage bride with a baby inside.”

    3. It is ironic that the Red Hot Chili Peppers sung this, because the lyrics are saying the “Californication” lifestyle is not real even though you’d expect them to be living it.

    1. I think the overall concept of the song Californication is that in California people almost get brain-washed into thinking and believing unreal things. The theme of the song is about people wanting to be like the stars and be materialistic, which is not reality. The video looking like a video game represtants that California is unreal and fake.

    2. When it says "It's the edge of the world" the video shows the edge, looking down and shows a ditch. When it says "A teenage pride, with a baby inside" it shows a pregnant teenager. Last it says "buy me a star on the boulevard" it showed the sky.

    3. The reason why this is ironic for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to sing this is because they are famous, and live in California and live the famous life-style.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1.The music video is based on a video game. All video games are fake and unreal. The first line is “Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind elation”, this means that technology is taking over our imagination and our minds.

2.One way the video showed a visual interpretation was when they showed number of Swedish girls lining up to audition for a movie or something in that direction. Another way is when they showed a pregnant teenager when the lyrics said “a teenage bride with a baby inside.” The final way is when they showed hard core soft porn being filmed.

3.It’s ironic that the Chili Peppers performed this song because they are famous and you would imagine that they live the “Californication” lifestyle. Our fantasy of being rich and famous is their reality. Finally, they accuse Hollywood of being fake and unrealistic, but they probably had someone from Hollywood make their music video.

  40. 1. The overall concept of the music video is a video game. Video games are never real and I think this ties into the song “Californication” and the point the red hot chili peppers are trying to get across. That californication isn’t as great as the media portray it.
    2. the three ways the video shows a visual interpretation is:
    a. When they say “teenage bride with a child inside” they show a pregnant teenager.
    b. When they say “space may be the final frontier but its filmed in a Hollywood basement” they show space ships fighting in a Hollywood basement.
    c. When they say “ earthquakes are to a girls guitar their just another good vibration” they show a city being hit by an earthquake and the buildings falling down
    3. Its ironic that the video is performed by the red hot chili peppers because they are stars and they know what its like to live in “Californication”.its ironic that I watched a video about it because its more of our generation that is being exposed to these kind of lifestyle. And we are the ones being targeted with these unrealistic dreams of californication

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1.I think that the overall concept is that because this video was made like a video game, that their trying to make it seem that California and the life there isn’t what we all think it is and that its fake. Also, that a lot of video games show things that aren’t in everyday life and don’t happen in our society, so maybe this video and song is also trying to tell us that California isn’t all good.
    2. Three ways this video offers visual interpretation of the song’s lyrics is because in the video they show a pregnant bride, and the song says “a teenage bride with a baby inside, getting high on information.” Also, the song says “physic spies from China, try to steal your minds elation”, and in the video people are running from Asian spies. Another thing that the lyrics and video have in common is that the video showed a movie being filmed in the basement, and the lyrics of the song say “But it’s in a Hollywood Basement”.
    3. I think its ironic for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be singing this song because they are part of Hollywood, but yet they are saying that its all fantasy and unrealistic. It seems like they live that life though. I also I think its weird for us to be watching this video because we see Hollywood and California to be this amazing place and than in this video its making it seem like its all fake.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1. The overall theme of the lyrics is a video game. The video game is pretty much showing how fake and unrealistic California is. I think the idea of it being a video game is because people see Hollywood, California being the place to be as a star, but what people don’t realize is that people living in California face many problems.

    2. “Psychic spies from China” They show a Chinese guy at the beginning 2. “Made in Hollywood basement” there’s a scene when movies are being shot in a basement. 3. “A teenage bride with a baby inside” is also shown in the video.

    3. It is ironic that it is performed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers because they are in California, Hollywood probably experiencing “Californication.”

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. The concept of the video shows that the band members are in a race to reality. The music video shows that the band members are in a video game. Most video games are not real, things happen in a game that would never happen in real life. this relates to California because things that happen in CAlifornia dont happen in our everyday lives.

    2. Three ways the video showed a visual interpretation of the lyrics are...

a.In the video it showed a pregnant women which the lyrics quote "Teenage bride with a baby inside".

    b. Im the video it shows one of the band members running in the city where there is a earthquake taking place which the lyrics quote "And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar, they’re just another good vibration".

c.In the video it shows this women who came to california to complete her dreams of being a movie star which the lyrics quote, "Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations".

3.I think its ironic that we are watching a video of what we dream life would be like, but most people live like this such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In the lyrics they pretty much say how this life in california is not real.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. The over all concept of this video is trying to show what exactly life is all about. The lyrics descibe a meaning on what "californication" is all about. Everyone dreams of a fulfilled, miraculous life. And it all lies in Hollywood, California as most say.

    2. The three visual interpretations that stood out in the video was the pregnant woman, which is a perfect example of "fornication." The other striking scene was when a character was swimming in the ocean, dodging all of those things coming along. It shows that even when things come at you at a fast pace, you can easily deny it if you chose to. And lastly, the car driving recklessly describes how people never think what their consequences can be, they just do what they want, but never think what will happen in the long run.

    3. The ironic part of this is that the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are in Hollywood, and they are living that same exact life. They are the definition of Califonication.

  45. 1. I think that the music video is shown in a video game because video games are never realistic and the things that happen in them would'nt happen in real life. This relates to california because it is displayed to be a wonderful place to achieve your dreams, but isn't what it seems to be.

    2. One is when they say "made in Hollywood basement", the setting in the video is as if you are in a basement. A second one is when in the song they say "Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations." When this is said two attractive girls that appear to be swedish appear in the video. A third one is when they showed a pregnant teenager when the lyrics were, "Teenage bride with a baby inside."

    3. It is ironic because they are critize Hollywood and how they are wrong when they are using Hollywood to ake this video and have probably used it in the past

    ReplyDelete
  46. The music video was set to look like a video game. The concept of a video game was to make you think that maybe the things are not what they seem. It also played up the image of Hollywood and California.

They showed a movie about space being filmed in a basement, they showed a pregnant teenager, and they showed a young girl coming off a bus going into a casting agency.

I think it’s ironic that it is being performed by the Chili Peppers, because they are a very well liked band and rock stars. Rock stars like them usually live that kind of crazy life style. It’s ironic that we are watching it because we are watching it on the same thing that gives us ideas of the californication lifestyle.

  47. 1. They made the video like a cartoon or a video game to prove that it's all fake and a fantasy drempt up by peoples hopes and dreams. People imagined California as the best place in the world to have fun and relax.

    2. During the Video there were senes where they showed pregnant teenagers, the showed clips of a space movie being filmed in a studio, and they showed a Porno in the oher room, all as he's being chased by the police. As the lyrics of the song change, so does the whole mood of the video. It just gets more emotional and energetic.

    3. I think it's Ironic that they say it's all a dream, but they made it a reality by becoming famous and probably using a studio to make the video.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I thought that the video showed the theme suggested by the lyrics by showing the world as a game. This went with the theme because the theme is saying how immature people act now and this showed it with a kid’s video game. 3 ways the video shows visual interpretation are 1st when it showed the little fight between what looked like people from Star Wars. The 2nd is when all the building were falling it was showing an earthquake. The 3rd way is the ground splits and it shows it as the edge of the world. It is ironic that this was performed by the Chili Peppers because they are one of those celebrities that everyone is trying to be like and the song is talking about. It is also ironic that I am watching it because the song talks about how everything is made in California and that its bad and corrupt but people still watch it and by it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The whole video is almost animated, Like a cyperworld. So nothing is real. It only seems real until you get there and find out that its not what you expected, false hopes. The songs images and videos represent what it really is rather than what everyone expects it to be.

    2. The verse from the song “Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations.", shows in the viedo a girl getting off a bus and going into a casting agency where she would audition for a movie or t-show. Another example is when the verse comes up about the hollywood basement its shows an adult movie being made. Another example is that in the video it shows a pregnant teenager when the line "teenage bride with a baby inside" was sung.

    3. Its ironic because they probally filmed it on a sound stage in some movie lot in hollywood.

  50. After watching the music video for Californication I think that the music video and lyrics tie hand in hand. The video was set up as a video game, which is fake, and just another success in the world of technology. Today some people view video games as a world that is depriving young people from seeing the real world, from seeing what really goes on. Also, “Californitcation” is unrealistic and giving people a false dream, which to me is what the music video is saying.

Three things from the video that showed a visual interpretation of the lyrics is :
    1. They showed a teenage girl who was pregnant getting information from the spies. 2. Also, “little girls from Sweden” in the video it showed a young girl getting off the bus to go into a casting call. 3. They show a movie being made in a “Hollywood basement”

It is ironic that the Chili Peppers are singing this song because essentially they are “rock stars”, they are in a way what the “Californication" lifestyle would be like. I think it’s ironic that we as teenagers just watched a music video about Hollywood and people being fake is because normally most teens do get caught up in being materialistic and wanting to have the best things. Also because we always end up wanting to try and impress other people so sometimes we are a little fake. And it’s just ironic because were teens and there rock stars and in many people’s minds both of our lifestyles would be considered unreal.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 1.) The overall concept of the music video is a video game. The video game shows the Chili Peppers going throughout all of California letting you see what it is really like living there. It shows people that California is nothing like what the media makes it out to be, so everything is fake, just like a video game.

2.)They show a blond Swedish looking girl getting off a bus going into a casting agency when the song says “Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations.”

They also show a porn video being made on a Hollywood basement when they say “it’s made in a Hollywood basement.”

Then they show a pregnant teenage girl when the song says “A teenage bride with a baby inside.”

3.) It’s ironic that the chili Peppers perform it because they are from California and they know what the life there is like. It’s also ironic that I have just watched the video for it because all teenagers think of how cool it would be to live in Hollywood, but after seeing what it’s really like teens don’t like it anymore.

    1. The whole music video is in the style of a video game. This is supposed to represent the unrealistic fun of Californian/Hollywood life and how it is essentially fake, differs from reality and is deteriorating our minds.
    2. Three ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation is the pregnant teenage girl, the way they show a “Hollywood basement” and show him dodging asian spies.
    3. It is ironic because the Red Hot Chili Peppers live and were originated in California

  53. 1) The song Californication talks about what america has become. Meaning that its all about how you look. People are getting plastic surgery and always altering their appearance.

2)I have seen the video to this song. This reminds me of how people today do the craziest things. Even if the stunt or whatever is going on is life threatening some person will do it.

3)The Chili Peppers really are a very big rock band. I bet that they live in california today partying and living a life of fantasy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The overall concept of the song is that life in California is shown and perceived to be so glamorous and nice that everyone wants to live that life and in the video it is all a video game and its saying that California is like a video game you can choose who you want to be and make it happen and you can do what you want and not get in trouble for it.

    Three visual interpretations:
    1) It says a teenage bride with a baby inside and it shows that in the video.
    2) It says space may be the final frontier and it shows a space scene being filmed in a Hollywood studio.
    3) It shows porn being filmed in the basement of a Hollywood studio.

It is ironic because the red hot chili peppers probably made that video with the help of people in Hollywood and they probably live like the people they were describing in the song.

    ReplyDelete
  55. 1. Basically the overall video is in a ‘video game’ format and displays one of the themes dealing with media. The musicians are characters from a video game and are living a life “California” style. Partying, cruising around town, and just relaxing. This concept is explained throughout the whole video.
    2. One way the video offers a visual interpretation of the images in the lyrics is how they say in one of the verses, “destruction leads to a very rough road.” They show the video game character dodging buildings that are quickly falling down. Another way they show imagery is where they show a unicorn falling. This represents how in California no one is unique; many people are fake and go to plastic surgeons. One other example is when they have the character running from the “physic Asian spies” which steal your mind’s elation.
    3. It is ironic that this video was produced and recorded by the Chili Peppers because they themselves are rock stars, and people usually view them as living “Californication” every day. After listening to this song it makes you realize they are just normal people doing what they love, and sometimes not all rock stars are like that.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1) The overall concept that demonstrates the theme of the lyrics is that the video is suggested to be like a video game. Video games are fantasies and in the lyrics of the song it is suggesting that the portrayed life in California is a fantasy.
    2) In the song they showed a pregnant teenager in the video when the lyrics said Teenage bride with a baby inside, they also showed a set of space in a Hollywood Studio basement. there is a description of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, “And buy me a star on the boulevard, it’s Californication,” and in the video they show the Hollywood Walk of Fame (stars on a sidewalk) and someone with hopes and dreams walking toward it.
    3) It is ironic that this song is performed by the Chili Peppers because they are in the center of the reason why California is viewed as that and why people want the fantasy life portrayed in California. They are spreading the views of the “Californication” by being in the limelight and producing music/music videos that will be heard/viewed all over the world.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The reason the music video is made to look like a video game is because of the lyrics "Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind’s elation." Which means that things like video games are destroying your imagination.
Three ways lyrics were represented visually was that it showed space in a hollywood basement, soft porn being filmed, and a pregnant teenager with a baby inside.
i think this song is ironic because the chillie peppers are a very popular rock group and would be visualized as a type of californiacation.

    Theme: Social Inequality

The social inequality of To Kill a Mocking Bird is explored using the town of Maycomb and its complicated hierarchy. In the novel some people are socially better than other people do to their race, wealth, and attributes. For example, the Cunnignhams are below the Finch family because the Finch family is wealthier. The Ewells are below the Cunnignhams because of their immoral behavior. The African Americans, despite their moral behavior and good attributes, are below the Ewells because of their race.
In the novel Mr. Ewell is able to pin a rape charge on Tom Robinson even though Tom is innocent. Mr. Ewell is able to do this because he is higher on the social scale then Tom. Even though Atticus put forth exceptionally valid reasons why Tom couldn’t have raped Mr. Ewell’s daughter the jury still decided Tom was guilty do to the fact that Tom is an African American. – chapters 16-20 (the trial takes place)

  61. 1. What about the overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics? Californication is the song that describes how much of an influence California is to all the places in the world who try to imitate it. This song describes its stereotypes and its flaws. It shows the true nature of those who live there and who want to live there. It seems to be based as a video game concept/theme.
    2. Name 3 (total) ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics.
It makes a video or image like old celebrities going for the skin uplifting and surgeries to hide their aging.
Am image of the space like structure that we see in the movies, which is actually made at the basement in the studios.
A visual of some people against population and yet they are raising too many babies of their own.
    3. In relation to the song's theme, why is it ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers and that you have just watched a video for it?
I feel that it is ironic because it seems to make fun of the "California" lifestyle, yet the Red
Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most successful rock/funk bands of our time and they were actually formed in Los Angeles, California. The video makes fun of the exact things that have ultimately helped them be so famous and successful.

    1. The overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics because in the video it is a videogame. The videogame is an example of something unrealistic. The video shows that Hollywood is not exactly as it is portrayed by the media. Another part of the video is the control over the video game player. Just like the control the paparazzi and other people have over celebrities the gamer was being controlled too.

    2. One symbol is the unicorn. The unicorn flies out in the beginning, the usage of a unicorn is in the lyrics. Another symbol is the pregnant teenager who is shown in the video, this is an example because in the lyrics a pregnant teenager is mentioned. Another one is a little girl from Sweden.

    3. It is ironic that this song is performed by the Chili Peppers because they grew up in California and they were a part of the Hollywood life. They sold songs about the corruption of this life but profited off of them.

  63. The theme of the song Californication is that Hollywood California is fake or unreal. They show an unrealistic image of a famous person as a player in a video game. Video games are for pleasure and do not display a real look on an event.
    1. They show a pregnant teenager. This follows the lyrics “Teenage bride with a baby inside”
    2. They show pretty girls walking through Hollywood having dreams and becoming movie stars, getting off a bus. This refers to “Little girls from Sweden Dream of Silver Screen quotations”
    3. In the video there is a falling unicorn. This refers back to the theme of having a unrealistic life.

It is ironic that the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are singing a song about an unrealistic life in Hollywood and the dreams that people have because they experienced this in their life. They have grown as a band living in and working in Hollywood California and are talking about the life that is just a dream.

  64. 1. What about the overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics?
    • I think the overall concept of the music video is a video game. The video is connected with California and Hollywood because people there are fake and unreal. The people in California live in a fantasy world, just like a video game.

    2. Name 3 (total) ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics.
    • Three ways the video offers a visual interpretation are:
1.) The pregnant teenager and the lyrics say “a teenage bride with a baby inside”
2.) They said “Pay your surgeon very well, to break the spell of aging”- saying people should look perfect in every way, which is unreal
3.) There was a unicorn representing the fantasy

    3. In relation to the song's theme, why is it ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers and that you have just watched a video for it?
    • It is ironic that this song is preformed by the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s because they’re saying how “Californication” is a fake unreal lifestyle and yet they are pretty much living it, they are part of Hollywood.

  65. the music video is a video game which is unreal and fake. the song californication has to do with the music video because it is also talking about fake people and fake things. also in the beggining when the people controlling the game they are deciding what the guys in the game are going to look like and wear, they have no say in it at all, that is also how people in california are fake and don't have a say on what they do. and they look how other people want them to look.
    2. one symbol is the unicorn, there is a unicorn meantioned in the song. another thing would be the pregnant teenager that they show, there is also something about that in the song. a third thing is when the people are running from asian spies and in the song it also meantions that.

The video then shows a person with hope and dream walking down the boulevard.

    1. What about the overall concept helps to demonstrate the theme suggested by the lyrics?

This music video is set to a video game. The concept of a video game is make believe. Things happen in the video game that you cannot do in real life. So the overall concept of the music video being a video game shows that California and especially, Hollywood, is a place of make believe. People there are searching for the perfect appearance and it does not reflect the real world. Just like a video game is all make believe and not the real world.

    2. Name 3 (total) ways in which the video offers a visual interpretation of the symbols and/or images in the lyrics.

When they are signing about the lines “And if you want these kind of dreams. Its Californication”, the lead singer is set up in the clouds because that’s usually what you think of when you are dreaming. The lead singer is also very clean cut with Blond hair instead of his long, dark, wild hair that is in his face. The lead guitarist has a very short haircut and looks very cleaned up from his normal looks of long wild hair and a beard. They both have been changed to more of the ideal California surfer dude look.

On the lines “little girls from Sweden Dream of silver screen quotations”, the video game shows the singer running pass a bus which has a young blond girl getting off the bus and walking towards a building that has a sign of Casting Agency. So you can assume the girl is going to audition for a part in a movie.

On the line “It’s the edge of the world”, the video game switches to one of the band members snowboarding over the edge of a mountain. Again the video is providing the visual interpretation of the going over the edge of the world. Hollywood has gone too far in selling the perfect person and this is shown by falling of the edge of the mountain.

    3. In relation to the song's theme, why is it ironic that it is performed by the Chili Peppers and that you have just watched a video for it?

The Chili Peppers are not known for being a plastic Hollywood band. They are more closely aligned with a rebellious type Rock band. The lead singer and lead guitarist have long, wild hair, beards and lots of tattoos. The song’s theme is about artificial values in our society today but from their appearances, they do not conform at all to the artificial values placed on looks from Hollywood. They are quite the opposite of Hollywood’s “look perfect” appearances. They are not buff, muscular built but actually look quite out of shape. So, to me, its ironic they are singing about dreaming about Caliornication.
